Vecchia Torre Salice Salentino 2016: Puglia, Italy

Grapes: Negroamaro/Malvasia Nera

Region/History Notes: Puglia, the heel of the boot of Italy, has a very warm, Mediterranean climate. Salice Salentino produces red wines with juicy fruit, thick tannins and a smoky finish primarily from the Negroamaro grape. This blend by has about 15% Malvasia Nera added for more intense color and floral aromatics. Believe it or not, I did not always gravitate to Italian wines. It was a rustic red wine from Salice Salentino that first got me hooked- and I’ve never looked back!

Tasting Notes: Fuller bodied without being overwhelming, juicy black fruit, cherries, blackberries with a little leather, smoke and spice to round it out. I love this wine with burgers, leaner steaks, ribs, or after dinner with dark chocolate.
