Oenops “Apla” 2017: Drama, Macedonia, Greece

Grapes: Xinomavro/Limniona/Mavroudi

Region/History Notes: Mediterranean climate throughout the Macedonian region of Greece with a diverse range of soil types. While this winery is newly established (2015) the owner and winemaker, Nikos Karatzos is well known throughout Greece and the vines range up to 60 years old. He makes white, rosé, and red wine and they are all delicious but red was my favorite. He operates and makes his wine sustainably from a collection of vineyards in the area.

Tasting Notes: Look at that color! I can usually tell I am going to enjoy a wine in the first few seconds of seeing/smelling it and this was no exception. Deep fuchsia coloring with a perfumed nose that tells you how velvety smooth it is going to be. Geranium floral notes with plum, black cherry, raspberry, and hints of smoke on the palate. Velvety smooth finish and medium-bodied while still maintaining freshness.
