Champalou Vouvray Chenin Blanc 2019: Loire Valley, France
Grapes: Chenin Blanc
Region/History/Producer Notes: Vouvray is a region in the Touraine district of the Loire Valley, France. To be called “Vouvray” the wine has to be 100% Chenin Blanc but can be made in a range of styles. Kermit Lynch changed the wine world over the last few decades. He works with boutique, independent growers (people making wine from their own grapes) making incredible small-production wines that focus on terroir and balance.
Tasting Notes: Champalou has been a continuous favorite producer of mine. Hints of apple/pear/white flowers/lanolin/honeycomb. It is dry but honeyed, luscious but racy, fragrant but soft, approachable but nuanced. So versatile and age-worthy. Pair with anything on your table from rich seafood to baked chicken thighs, from ham cheese boards, from casseroles to creamy pasta dishes.
